When I first started building React applications, I shoved everything into App.jsx. State, UI, API calls—it was all one giant, tangled mess. Over the years, and specifically while building large-scale applications at Startise, I learned the incredible value of clean architecture.
Why Abstraction Matters
One of the most important concepts I advocate for is separating your UI layer from your data layer.
For example, when building this exact blog feature for my portfolio, I had a choice:
- Hardcode
.mdxcomponents directly into my pages. - Build a Service layer (
blogService.js) that fetches data and returns a predictable object.
I chose the second approach. Here’s what my service layer looks like:

By decoupling the data source from the view, my React components become “dumb” (in a good way). They only care about receiving a post object and rendering it.

- Future-Proofing: Switching to a Headless CMS tomorrow requires zero UI changes.
- Testing: I can easily mock the service layer in unit tests.
- Readability: Junior developers can look at my components and immediately understand what’s happening without getting bogged down by fetch logic.
