The Art of Clean React Architecture

When I first started building React applications, I shoved everything into App.jsx. State, UI, API calls—it was all one giant, tangled mess. Over the years, and specifically while building large-scale applications at Startise, I learned the incredible value of clean architecture.

Why Abstraction Matters

One of the most important concepts I advocate for is separating your UI layer from your data layer.

For example, when building this exact blog feature for my portfolio, I had a choice:

  1. Hardcode .mdx components directly into my pages.
  2. Build a Service layer (blogService.js) that fetches data and returns a predictable object.

I chose the second approach. Here’s what my service layer looks like:

  // If I ever switch to a CMS like Sanity, 
  // I only change code in this one file.

  return allPosts.find(post => post.slug === slug);
}

By decoupling the data source from the view, my React components become “dumb” (in a good way). They only care about receiving a post object and rendering it.

The Benefits

  • Future-Proofing: Switching to a Headless CMS tomorrow requires zero UI changes.
  • Testing: I can easily mock the service layer in unit tests.
  • Readability: Junior developers can look at my components and immediately understand what’s happening without getting bogged down by fetch logic.

A Real-World Example

Let’s look at how we render lists dynamically:

  • First item in a bulleted list
  • Second item showing we support standard markdown
  • Third item for good measure
