Why I Prefer Native CSS Scroll-Snap Over Heavy JS Libraries

If you’ve ever tried to build a “Browse By Category” slider or an image carousel, your first instinct was probably to reach for a massive JavaScript library. I used to do exactly the same thing. But recently, while developing the BloggerZen landing page template, I decided to try something different.

The Problem with JS Sliders

JavaScript sliders (like Slick or older versions of Swiper) come with a cost:

  1. Bundle Size: They can add 30kb - 100kb+ of JavaScript to your page.
  2. Performance: They constantly monitor touch events, mouse movements, and window resizing, causing layout thrashing.
  3. Jank: On low-end mobile devices, dragging the slider can feel disconnected from the user’s finger.

The CSS Scroll-Snap Solution

Modern CSS has given us scroll-snap. It allows us to create perfectly smooth, native-feeling sliders using only CSS.

Here is the core structure I implemented for the BloggerZen category slider:

Adding UX Polish

A pure CSS slider is great, but users still expect certain interactions. I added lightweight JavaScript only for enhancements, not for the core mechanics.

For instance, I added active states and hover effects using CSS, and a tiny bit of JS to scroll the active element into the center of the viewport when clicked.

The Verdict

By dropping the heavy JS dependency, the BloggerZen template’s Lighthouse performance score jumped significantly. The scrolling feels native because it is native—handled entirely by the browser’s compositor thread.

Before you npm install another massive UI library, ask yourself: Can I do this with CSS? You’d be surprised how often the answer is yes.
